It's time for my yearly reminder that it's important for you to wear sunscreen and/or protective clothing when out in the sun and please, don't ever use tanning beds.

You should also be checking your skin regularly for any changes in your skin or moles. If you are not sure if something is suspicious or not, visit http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/dysplastic-nevi-syndrome.html to view photos of irregular moles/lesions. This page has photos of melanomas: http://www.skincancer.org/self_exam/look_for.php

Take a few minutes to look through the photos and then check your skin. Check your partner, your children and your friends. It may sound overly dramatic, but you could possibly save their life. Have your family doctor or a dermatologist check anything suspicious.

*I* found my melanoma myself by checking my skin and having a doctor immediately remove a mole that had changed.

For those of us who have little ones, or those who would rather have as few chemicals in our system as possible, I found this site...

Also, this is a great reminder. You can buy these little stickers turn a different color when you need to reapply sunblock. Takes all the worry about the frequency needed, cause it is taken care of! :)

I think I read somewhere that vitamin C (ingested) also helps protect your skin. My daughter's skin is very sensitive to most sunscreens. My pediatrician told me years ago to try to avoid paba and fragrances if you can. I've experimented with so many brands and usually buy the generic sports variety. They seem to stay on my sweaty kids better.

After I posted the thread, a friend of mine noticed a rash on the back of my neck. So when I got home, I used a mirror to take a look at it, and noticed another mole that has to be removed. (sigh) So.....I called my dermatologist's office and the receptionist told me there were no openings until March 2008! Can you believe that!? :wtf:
It's not like I was calling about a pimple or a rash!

Now I'm on a mission to find a new doctor.
