Jealousy - how do you deal with it?

I have a friend who's girlfriend is so jealous he can't move. He can't go out with friends in case he "meets a girl", he can't shake hands with female colleagues because it means "he fancies them". She's physically abusive to him if she thinks he so much as glances at another woman.

I've tried telling him this is insane and he should dump her and move on but he says he loves her. Also told him he should maybe question what SHE does when he's not around - my experience has been that those who accuse you of cheating are often cheating themselves.....

How would you deal with this if it was a friend of yours? (I'm hoping he will toddle past this and read it :) )

There was a song to cover such situations, "Walk on by."

Ahhhh, if only it were that easy. Some people (like this poor guy), need that kind of (believe it or not) reassurance. So long as she harrasses's and harranges him she shows him that she loves and cares about him. Ridicules, I know, but guys and girls like him have such low self esteems that this is the kind of attention they believe they deserve. He most likely won't leave her until he realizes he deserves better and that day may never come.

Seems an intervention is in order.

Might not help, but it certainly couldn't hurt. The other option would be to confront the girlfriend.
