Tomorrow Feb 2, 2007 is National Wear Red For Women Day! A special day set aside by the American Heart Association to remind us that heart disease is the number 1 killer of woman. Annually over 400,000 woman die of this often undiagnosed disease.

So I ask all of you to pick something, big or small, that is red to wear tomorrow in loving memory of our dear SilverWolf, and maybe someone you know who became an unwitting part of this horrible statistic.

For more information on heart disease in both men and woman, and what you can do to help, please visit
www.americanheart.org. There you will find all the statistics, facts and learn which merchants are participating in tomorrow's event and how.

    Women 'unaware of heart risk'

Campaigners say women are unaware of heart risks

Women are "dangerously unaware" of the threat of heart disease, campaigners have warned. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the biggest killer of women, but most consider cancer to be the greatest threat.

The British Heart Foundation says more must be done to alert women to the dangers of heart disease, which killed over 54,000 women in 2001 - more than four times the number killed by breast cancer.

The BHF is launching a campaign to urge women to take more care of their hearts, which will involve a national advertising campaign to raise awareness.

    CHD risk factors
    • Smoking
    • High blood pressure
    • High blood cholesterol
    • Diabetes
    • Being overweight or obese
    • Physical inactivity
    • Poor diet
    • Family history
Death rates from CHD amongst women are falling, but at a slower rate than for men, and slower than for women in other countries.

At least 1.2 million women are now living with heart disease.

    Tegan,

It's the same here in the UK as you can see by the message I posted from BBC news.

I didn't have the courage to look up WHO statistics, they are probably too staggering. I heard on the news today that only about 18% of women here even realize that heart disease is a bigger killer than cancers for woman. They still recognize it as a "man's disease". Doctors do to, as we found out by Maria's woman doctor. Frightening really!
